Sketchy Thursdays was started in January of 2014 just after Kristofer Parley and Nathan Nazo Davis moved to Chinatown in Downtown Victoria, BC. Inspired to create art in a city new to them and with only a few friends Nathan put a post on Instagram that said he would be sketching at a certain place at a certain time and anyone who wanted to sit down and do some doodles with him was welcome. What started as Kristofer, Nathan and their friend Andrew doing some doodles together started turning into a weekly night where they would see a few new faces every other week join them in creating art. Two rules were set from the beginning... respect each other and respect the business. As long as these two rules were followed anyone was welcome to sit down with the group. Inspiring each other to create art and helping each other learn new styles, techniques and mediums in a non-judgmental environment has been the focus behind Sketchy Thursdays. Art should be accessible to everyone and can be a very therapeutic, positive outlet so Kristofer and Nathan started bringing extra sketchbooks and markers to share incase someone showed up with no supplies. Organically this group has grown and formed a chill, fun little community of diverse artists from all walks of life who are all helping each other be better artists and humans, focusing on positivity.
As space is limited, seating is first come first served so make sure you get there by 6:30pm to make sure you get a spot. As it's a very casual night sometimes there may only be 3-4 of us and sometimes there can be 30-40 people... every week is different. And again, everyone is welcome regardless of age, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, political views, etc etc.
Sketchy Thursdays is about creating art and you are in a safe space to do so.
